Toronto is one of the best cities in North America for bold, flavour-forward food — and few cuisines capture that spirit better than Hakka cuisine. A vibrant fusion of Indian spices and Chinese cooking techniques, Hakka food has become a beloved staple for food lovers across the GTA. At Chakhna Indian & Hakka Bar on Bloor Street West, we’ve built our entire Hakka menu around the dishes Toronto actually craves: fiery, saucy, customisable, and deeply satisfying.
Whether you’re new to Indo-Chinese cuisine or a lifelong Hakka food fan hunting for the best version in the city, this guide covers the five dishes you absolutely cannot leave our restaurant without trying.
Before we dive into the dishes, a little context goes a long way.
Hakka cuisine — also called Indo-Chinese cuisine — was born in Kolkata, India, in the 19th century when Chinese immigrants (the Hakka people) settled in the city and began cooking with local Indian ingredients like ginger, garlic, green chillies, and aromatic spices. The result was a style of cooking that married Chinese wok technique with Indian heat and boldness.
Today, Hakka food is one of the most popular street-food and restaurant cuisines across India, and it has found a passionate following in cities like Toronto, where the South Asian and East Asian communities have both embraced it. Dishes like Hakka noodles, Manchurian, and Chilli Chicken are core to the Indo-Chinese food experience — and at Chakhna, we cook every dish to order with your choice of protein and spice level.

If there's one dish that defines Chakhna's Hakka bar, it's the Chilli Garlic Noodles. These aren't the mild, takeout-style noodles you might be thinking of — these are bold, fragrant, and loaded with the kind of garlicky heat that keeps you coming back bite after bite.
Thin Hakka noodles are tossed in a wok over high flame with fresh garlic, whole dried red chillies, spring onions, soy sauce, and a house chilli paste that we've developed in-house. The wok char — that signature smoky, slightly caramelised flavour — is what separates a great plate of Chilli Garlic Noodles from an ordinary one

Customise it: Choose from veg, paneer, chicken, or egg protein. Spice levels range from mild to extra hot. Our recommendation? Go medium-hot with chicken for your first try.
Why Torontonians love it: It’s the kind of dish that satisfies both the Indo-Chinese food nostalgia of South Asian diners and the curiosity of anyone new to Hakka cuisine. It pairs perfectly with a cold Kingfisher beer from our bar.
Best paired with: Honey Chilli Garlic Potatoes (starter) + Kingfisher Indian Lager

$15.99 | Also available as Manchurian or Schezwan style from $17.99
No Hakka food experience is complete without Chicken Lollipop. This iconic Indo-Chinese starter features drumettes that have been frenched (meat pushed to one end to create a lollipop shape), marinated in ginger, garlic, and chilli, then deep fried until the exterior is shatteringly crisp while the inside stays juicy and flavourful.
At Chakhna, you can order Chicken Lollipop three ways: classic, Manchurian style (tossed in a savoury, umami-forward Manchurian sauce), or Schezwan style (coated in that bold, tangy Schezwan sauce). All three versions are house favourites, but the Manchurian Chicken Lollipop is the one that tends to disappear fastest from the table.
Best paired with: Veg Munchow Soup (to start) + Hakka Noodles (as a main)

This one is uniquely ours. The Kurkure Noodle Spring Rolls are exactly what they sound like — crispy spring rolls stuffed with spicy, savoury Indo-Chinese noodles and coated in a Kurkure (the beloved Indian crunchy snack) crust that gives them an extra-shattering, textured crunch on the outside.
It's a fusion dish in the truest sense: Chinese spring roll technique, Indian street-food flavouring, Indo-Chinese noodle filling, and an iconic Indian snack brand turned into a coating. The result is something you genuinely can't find anywhere else in Toronto.
These make for an excellent starter or shareable snack alongside drinks, and they're a favourite among first-time visitors who want to try something they haven't seen on a menu before.
Best paired with: Sweet Chilli dipping sauce + any cocktail from the bar (the Mango Chilli Margarita is especially good)

$12.99 (Delhi Style - Dry / Gravy)
Ask anyone who grew up eating Hakka food in India what their comfort dish is, and there's a good chance they'll say Manchurian. The dish — said to have been invented by Chinese-Indian chef Nelson Wang in Mumbai in the 1970s — has become one of the most iconic Indo-Chinese preparations in the world.
Our Veg Manchurian (Delhi Style) features crispy vegetable koftas (balls made from grated cabbage, carrot, and onion, bound and deep fried) tossed in a rich, glossy Manchurian sauce built from soy sauce, garlic, ginger, cornstarch, and a blend of Indian aromatics. You can order it dry (crispy, sauce-coated) or in gravy (saucy, best eaten over steamed rice or noodles).
Best paired with: Hakka Fried Rice or Butter Garlic Noodles + Masala Peri Peri Fries on the side

Schezwan cuisine — inspired by the Sichuan province of China but adapted through an Indian palate — is one of the defining flavour profiles of Indo-Chinese cooking. Our Schezwan Noodles are built around a rich, tangy, deeply layered Schezwan sauce made with dried red chillies, garlic, and vinegar, giving every bite a hit of heat followed by a slow, building warmth that's completely addictive.
The noodles are wok-tossed with bell peppers, cabbage, spring onions, and your choice of protein, then coated in that signature Schezwan sauce. It's punchy, satisfying, and one of our most consistently re-ordered dishes.

Customise it: Works beautifully with egg, chicken, or paneer. If you’re a heat lover, go extra hot. If you’re bringing someone new to Hakka food, keep it mild-medium so the flavour complexity shines through.
Best paired with: Schezwan Chicken Lollipop + a Mango Chilli Margarita from the bar
